First Foods

Eleven spring Chinook passed the counting station on the Clearwater this year. Total. The families come to the First Foods gathering anyway, because staying home is a statement nobody wants to be first to make. The steel tray at the center of the table is empty where the salmon goes. Somebody has brought smoked lamprey up from a translocation reach, and the argument that follows turns on the seasonal record — what goes into it, who will ever open the file, and whether holding a space for a fish that isn't coming still counts as a claim.

Point Farm

Renée's mother never measured the seasoning. Just poured until the water looked right, and it was always right. Now Renée is doing the boil herself, same recipe, same pot, same yard in Terrebonne Parish, but the crawfish come from a landing she doesn't know, pulled by somebody she's never met. The freshwater canals where her uncle used to run traps went too salt years ago. In David Kern's story, a woman in coastal Louisiana spends an afternoon getting a crawfish boil right for twelve people, working with what she can still get.

Lot Day

In a shrinking coastal North Carolina neighborhood, seven houses stand where there used to be nineteen. The empty lots between them have acquired keepers, a binder, a sign-in sheet the county asked for, and a set of arguments about who tends what for whom. Once a year the block turns out to mow, prune, and clear drainage. A daughter drives in from Charlotte. A new couple brings a rain garden diagram and finds out that mowing a lot well for two years is not the same as keeping it. The ground still holds the shape of foundations pulled a decade ago.
